Perfect Old Fashioned - 2022
Recipe courtesy of Ron Wozny
INGREDIENTS
PREPARATION
In a cocktail mixing glass, add sugar cube, water, and 4 dashes bitters of your choice. Muddle together until sugar is dissolved. Add several ice cubes and whiskey. I also usually add just a little cherry syrup. Stir with a cocktail spoon until well chilled. Strain into old fashioned glass with large ice cube. Express orange peel into glass. Garnish with a cherry or two and the orange peel. Perfect!
Notes:
- 3 ounces (2 shots) bourbon or rye whiskey
- 4 dashes bitters (see notes below)
- 1 sugar cube (or 1 teaspoon)
- Splash water (about 1/2 ounce)
- Orange peel
- Cocktail cherries and syrup (Traverse City Premium Cocktail Cherries are my preferred. Luxardo and Wooford Reserve are also great. If you're using the bright red maraschino cherries, we can't be friends.)
- Ice (sphere or large cube preferred)

Notes:
- You can substitute sugar and water with 1/4 oz. simple syrup (1/3 oz. if you like it sweeter)
- For bitters, Angostura is always suitable, or your favorite flavors. We like the Fee Brothers cherry, black walnut, orange, or cranberry. Peychaud's is also a great choice. I usually do a combination of bitters. My go to is 2 dashes of Fee Brothers Cherry and 2 dashes of Fee Brothers Black Walnut.
- I highly recommend the Traverse City Premium Cocktail Cherries. I'll usually add a little of the cherry syrup as well.
- I prefer Maker's Mark Whisky, Bulleit Rye, and Buffalo Trace Bourbon
- Using a large cube or sphere of ice helps to slow melting.
