Mint Julep - 2016
Recipe courtesy of Ron Wozny

INGREDIENTS
  • 1.5 oz. (1 shot) simple syrup (instructions below)
  • 9 mint leaves
  • 3 oz. (2 shots) bourbon
  • Crushed ice
  • Powdered sugar
  • Mint sprigs for garnish

PREPARATION
In a double old fashioned glass (around 16 oz.), add a shot of simple syrup and 9 mint leaves. Muddle leaves against the side of the glass with the simply syrup. Don't crush and tear up the leaves... just muddle enough to release the oils from the veins of the leaves. Pack glass with crushed ice and add 2 shots of bourbon. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, add a straw and garnish with a mint sprig.

The perfect concoction for the first Saturday in May to watch the Kentucky Derby, or a refreshing summertime drink!

Simple Syrup: Pour equal parts water and sugar in a saucepan. Remember, the sugar dissolves into the water, so 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water will not equal 2 cups of simple syrup. It’s more like 1 ½ cups simple syrup once dissolved. Adjust your measurements as needed.

Heat the ingredients until dissolved. Stir the simple syrup and place the saucepan over medium heat. By the time the edges start to simmer, the liquid should be completely clear, not cloudy. Immediately remove from the heat source.
