The Cold Ember - Cold Brew Old Fashioned - 2026
Recipe courtesy of Ron Wozny

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 oz Bulleitt Rye Whiskey
  • 1/3 oz (1.5 tsp) demerara simple syrup
  • 1/2 oz cold brew concentrate
  • 3 shakes chocolate bitters
  • 1/4 oz water
  • Large ice cube
  • Lemon peel garnish

PREPARATION
  • In a mixing glass, combine rye whiskey, demerara syrup, cold brew concentrate, bitters, and water.
  • Add ice and stir until well chilled and slightly diluted, about 20–25 seconds.
  • Strain into an old fashioned glass over a large ice cube.
  • Express a lemon peel over the drink, rub the peel around the rim of the glass, and garnish.

Optional:
  • Lightly smoke the finished cocktail or glass with cherry wood or oak for 10–15 seconds.
  • Add 1–2 shakes cherry bitters for a darker, richer finish with subtle black cherry and baking spice notes.

Note: The Cold Ember is an original cold brew old fashioned I developed after being inspired by a coffee-forward whiskey cocktail I had at Fiori's, a restaurant in Flower Mound, TX. I wanted to create something darker, more balanced, and more spirit-forward — a drink that still respected the structure of a classic old fashioned while layering in cold brew, chocolate bitters, and bright lemon oils. The result is a rich but restrained cocktail with notes of dark roast coffee, rye spice, cocoa, and subtle citrus brightness.
